Low FODMAP side dishes

Sometimes you’re not looking for a dinner recipe, just a few cheeky side recipes. It occurred to me recently that I have never put together a collection of my low FODMAP side dishes, so that is precisely what we’re doing today.

Low FODMAP side dishes

Different meals require different sides, so I will do my best to group these appropriately. First, we’ve got potato based sides. The most important variety, if you ask me. Followed, of course, by carb based sides. Next, we have gluten free breads like focaccia and flatbread. After this, we’ve got salads. Some bigger and some smaller, they all work beautifully with a main. After that, we’re going through vegetable sides that are quick and simple. Finally, sauces and condiments. No meal is complete without them!

This roundup contains low FODMAP recipes, but I have also catered to multiple dietaries within low FODMAP confines. All of my recipes are gluten free and most are vegetarian. There are plenty of vegan, nut free, corn free and egg free options, too. I develop a lot of recipes without xanthan gum, so expect lots of those as well. Shall we get straight into it?

Low FODMAP potato side dishes

Parmesan crusted potatoes

These delicious sage and parmesan crusted potatoes taste like crispy stuffing on potato. They are so good that I can’t make them too often. Parmesan is a very low lactose and thus low FODMAP cheese, making this an easy low FODMAP side.

These Greek lemon potatoes are so easy to make yet taste so incredibly good. You can add some halloumi or leave them as is – if you do, they are naturally vegan.

Low FODMAP garlic mashed potatoes

Yes, you heard that right! This recipe uses pickled garlic which is a semi-recent addition to the Monash app. It adds a delicious garlic flavour to these mashed potatoes without the FODMAPs. Use lactose free dairy and you’re good to go!

Salt and vinegar roast potatoes

If you’re a salt and vinegar sort of person, look no further. These potatoes are par-boiled in vinegar before roasting for the best of both worlds. One of my earliest potato recipes and still one of my favourites.

Low FODMAP Mac and cheese

An essential side for any occasion, no? This Mac and cheese is gluten free and low FODMAP. It still uses a hefty amount of cheese and tastes as delicious as a regular ol’ Mac, but remains low lactose and low FODMAP.

Low FODMAP Nam Khao with crispy rice

I don’t know if we’d say this is carb based necessarily, but I couldn’t not include it! An absolutely dreamy side to Laotian, Thai or South East Asian flavoured proteins, this salad is incredibly good. Full of flavour, full of texture – you’ll want it as the main course.

My dad is from Yorkshire so I grew up with Yorkshire puddings. I must say, they really are the ultimate carby side dish. This recipe is gluten free, xanthan gum free and nut free and I challenge you to stop at one. I like to serve them with my low FODMAP vegan sausages.

Sometimes you need a good flatbread recipe to soak up all the goodness of your main course. This recipe has you covered. You can make the yeasted version or the yeast free version for a quicker weeknight meal. Both of these recipes are xanthan gum free and nut free.

Yeast free gluten free dinner rolls

The yeast free, gluten free girlies get stooged a lot, so I am trying to develop more yeast free recipes. This is a recipe from my gluten free, yeast free e-book. The rolls are fluffy, light and super quick to pull together.

Low FODMAP pico de gallo

This low FODMAP pico de Gallo uses a low FODMAP quantity of tomato and fennel to replace the crunch of white onion (among other things). It is fresh, delicious and a great replacement for the authentic version if you need it. I plan to add some pickled onion into the mix, so stay tuned for that too.

Low FODMAP onion rings

I am OBSESSED with these low FODMAP onion rings. They use a gluten free vegan batter and pickled onion to keep the FODMAP content down. You can eat around 5-6 rings per serve which makes them one of my favourite low FODMAP side dishes.

Low FODMAP edamame falafel

Are legumes vegetables? I say yes and so does Google. Enter: this delicious low FODMAP edamame falafel (that is packed with other herbs and greens, too). You’d never know that they are edamame based – they taste just like the falafels I remember. These are gluten free, nut free, egg free and vegan.

Yes, avocado is a vegetable and yes, a sauce still counts as a veggie side. This sauce is SO GOOD and just jam packed with flavour. Use it as a sauce, a guac or any way you prefer.

Low FODMAP Caesar salad with tofu croutons

I developed this salad when all bread (gluten free and regular) was giving me grief. I decided to use cubes of crispy tofu instead of bread to replace the protein from chicken (this is vegetarian) and to replace the bread.

Low FODMAP broccoli quinoa salad

A raw broccoli salad has been on my list forever now and I am so glad I made it happen. This fresh quinoa salad is peppered with pickled red onion (which is low FODMAP) goats cheese and either pine nuts or macadamias. Which nut you choose depends on your FODMAP concerns and which FODMAP app most closely aligns with your tolerances (Monash or FODMAP Friendly).

Low FODMAP gluten free tabbouleh

An absolute favourite to serve alongside my low FODMAP falafels (and in the low FODMAP falafel bowls), I am a long term tabbouleh lover. The freshness of all that parsley coupled with lemon is something I crave regularly. This version uses quinoa to remain gluten free.

Low FODMAP Vietnamese coleslaw

This is my favourite salad when summer rolls around. It is jam packed with flavour, fresh and crunchy, yet still gets some protein from the tofu. A low FODMAP summer home run, in my opinion.

Low FODMAP radicchio salad with blue cheese and maple walnuts

Blue cheese might be controversial in some circles, but not in my house. It is low FODMAP in serves of up to 178g per person, so you best believe I’m putting it in a salad. This delicious number encompasses some bitterness from the radicchio, bold creaminess from the blue cheese and sweet crunch from the maple walnuts. A perfect side for a hearty winter main.

Low FODMAP tahini coleslaw

Tahini coleslaw is probably my favourite ‘everyday’ coleslaw variety. It is punchy, creamy and has that delicious sesame flavour which we’re amping up with some toasted sesame oil. Simple and delicious.

Yes, low FODMAP aioli! As you might have guessed, we are using pickled garlic (that we’re roasting) for this easy aioli. All of the garlic flavour and none of the FODMAP content. This recipe is naturally dairy free and nut free.

Low FODMAP French onion dip

I choose to believe that French onion dip is a condiment, purely because it betters everything it touches. You can use it as a salad dressing or dare I say a creamy element to a pasta or pizza – anything goes. This recipe uses lactose free dairy and caramelised pickled onions for a delicious low FODMAP result.
