Can you tell I’m going through a recipe roundup phase? Today’s roundup topic is low FODMAP cake recipes. As we’ll discuss below, not all gluten free cakes are low FODMAP, so I wanted to write a special roundup specifically for low FODMAP treats.
Low FODMAP cake recipes (gluten free)
These cake recipes are all low FODMAP AND gluten free. These are different things, which we will discuss below. Where possible, the cakes are nut free and xanthan gum free. I try to give substitution options where possible. In addition, there are plenty of low FODMAP, gluten free AND vegan recipes.

What is the difference between low FODMAP and gluten free?
First, it’s important to distinguish that the low FODMAP diet is not necessarily a gluten free diet. While wheat is a high FODMAP ingredient, there are lower thresholds of wheat products that are deemed low FODMAP. There are also other gluten containing grains (such as spelt) that can be low FODMAP in varying quantities.
My recipes are all gluten free. This is because I don’t tolerate wheat products or oats. I also try to cater to as many different dietary requirements as possible with my recipes. So, this list contains low FODMAP cake recipes THAT ARE ALSO gluten free.
On the other end of the spectrum, not all gluten free cakes are low FODMAP. Some recipes contain bean flours or higher FODMAP quantities of fruits or alternate sugars such as coconut sugar.
Low FODMAP cakes
Easy gluten free chocolate cake
My pride and joy, this easy gluten free chocolate cake uses a single flour! No blends, no xanthan gum, no starches. Easy and delicious.
Gluten free vegan chocolate cake
A vegan version of my gluten free chocolate cake, this contains no eggs or animal products. This recipe is from my cookbook, Intolerance Friendly Kitchen.
Gluten free lemon drizzle cake
This gluten free lemon drizzle cake, like my chocolate cake, uses a single flour. You can use the base of the recipe for a pound cake style loaf, too.
Gluten free lemon olive oil cake
This combination of simple flavours couldn’t be more perfect in a cake. Bonus? Oil based cakes keep well for days.
Gluten free carrot cake
Is there anything better than a well spiced carrot cake with some cream cheese icing? I think not. This version uses lactose free cream cheese to keep the lactose content down.
Gluten free wholegrain carrot cake
More carrot cake? Why yes! This carrot cake is made from wholegrain flours, so there’s no starch based flour component. It is also xanthan gum free. This recipe is from my cookbook, Intolerance Friendly Kitchen. Pictured: an orange cake with the orange man in my life.
Gluten free lemon poppyseed cake
There’s something about poppy seeds that really uplifts a cake. This gluten free lemon poppy seed cake can be made as a cake or a loaf, too. We love options.
Gluten free vegan chocolate mug cake
I wasn’t sure if mug cake counts as cake, but it’s got cake in the name, so? This is my FAVOURITE mug cake that is a real treat yet is incredibly easy to make.
Gluten free chocolate olive oil cake
Olive oil gives such a nice and unique flavour to cakes, so I had to make this gluten free chocolate cake with olive oil. The cake is double chocolate and triple chocolate if you make the ganache icing.
Gluten free easy vanilla cake
Where there is chocolate cake, there should be vanilla cake. This is an easy, yoghurt based batter that is low FODMAP with the right yoghurt. More on that in the post.
Gluten free upside down orange cake
An easy and beautiful festive cake that uses oranges (or better yet, blood oranges) for a dramatic end result. The perfect dessert for winter produce.
Three ingredient mini cheesecake
Sometimes you just want a mini little treat, you know? This little cheesecake is a Basque style crustless number that can be made with as few as three ingredients.
Burnt Basque Cheesecake
Speaking of, this full sized Burnt Basque cheesecake is a recipe from my cookbook, Intolerance Friendly Kitchen. It uses lactose free cream and cream cheese to keep the FODMAP content low. Unlike most Burnt Basque recipes which use flour for stabilisation, this version is also gluten and grain free.
Vegan, gluten free spiced pumpkin mug cake
Back at it with the mug cakes! This one uses a quick pumpkin puree for a festive autumnal treat.
Gluten free zucchini cake with dairy free lime curd and lactose free cream cheese icing
My digestively challenged version of Queen Nigella’s courgette cake. This one is gluten free and uses a homemade dairy free lime curd and a lactose free cream cheese icing.
Flourless chocolate cake
Unlike a lot of flourless recipes, this cake is both flourless and nut free. It uses no flour at all, a success I stumbled upon after forgetting to add almond meal.
Gluten free vanilla birthday cake
This rich and buttery vanilla cake is a recipe from my cookbook, Intolerance Friendly Kitchen. It is fluffy and sweet and everything you’d want a birthday cake to be. Bonus points for using my brown butter chocolate buttercream on top.
Gluten free zucchini bread (sweet American style)
Does zucchini bread count as a cake? For the sake of my roundup, absolutely. This is a simple and sweet zucchini loaf that is a perfect end of summer treat.
Gluten free pumpkin loaf with chocolate chai icing
On the topic of loaves: this gluten free pumpkin loaf with chocolate chai spiced buttercream. Rich and delicious.
Gluten free vegan buckwheat mug cake
This delicious and easy buckwheat mug cake is a recipe from my buckwheat e-book. It contains no nuts, starches, xanthan gum or psyllium husk and is ready in 5 minutes.
