I love using white rice flour in baking. It’s relatively easy to find, tastes neutral enough and is inexpensive. With that all said, I’m aware that some members of the gluten free community can’t have rice or rice flour. Given the ubiquitous nature of rice flour in gluten free baking, I imagine this is incredibly difficult. With that in mind, I wanted to do a round up of all my gluten free recipes without rice flour.
Gluten free recipes without rice flour
As discussed, this is a collection of my gluten free recipes that are rice flour free. I have tried to divide them into breads, desserts and pastry, noodles and main courses.
This list doesn’t include recipes that are naturally rice flour free, like panna cotta or creme caramel. I wanted to group things that are generally not rice flour free so that they are easy to find for people who need them.
In addition to rice flour free, I aim to cater to as many broad and niche allergies as I can. As such, many of the recipes in this list are egg free, dairy free/vegan, nut free and xanthan gum free.
Gluten free breads and wraps without rice flour
Gluten free buckwheat bread
Of course, the gluten free buckwheat bread had to come first. It’s one of my favourite recipes full stop, never mind that it is made without rice flour.
Gluten free quinoa wraps
A newer recipe that I am absolutely loving, these 100% quinoa flour wraps are easy to make and arguably softer than the buckwheat version. Use toasted quinoa flour for a deliciously nutty wrap that everyone will love.
Gluten free buckwheat wraps
Of course, I can’t neglect my buckwheat wraps. I still make this recipe weekly and keep them in the freezer for egg wraps. They’re flexible, delicious and made with only buckwheat flour (no starches or gums).
Gluten free sourdough bread without rice flour
I’ve developed a number of gluten free sourdough recipes in my time but none were without rice flour. I developed this beauty especially for all the gluten free folk who can’t have rice flour.
Gluten free high protein bread
Can you tell I love buckwheat? These loaf uses buckwheat flour and cottage cheese to make a high protein loaf that is undetectably high protein. I keep it in the freezer for toast every morning and it keeps me feeling nice and full until lunch.
Gluten free vegan high protein bread
And for those who are dairy free or vegan? The vegan version! This bread uses cannellini beans (yes, beans) for a high protein hit. It has a low FODMAP threshold, too.
Gluten free high protein bagels
Permit me one last high protein recipe before we move on? High protein bagels are what inspired me on my high protein bread journey, so this felt only right. Like the high protein bread, they use cottage cheese for a protein hit – no rice flour required.
Grain free white bread
This grain free white bread uses cassava flour, tapioca flour and potato starch to create a white and fluffy grain free bread. It is xanthan gum free, too.
Grain free vegan bread without xanthan gum
For those who can’t have eggs or milk powder, I developed a vegan version of the grain free bread above. It’s equally as good, still nut free and xanthan gum free, but entirely plant based.
Gluten free desserts and pastry without rice flour
Gluten free buckwheat chocolate cake
This gluten free chocolate cake is not only vegan, but also made from 100% buckwheat flour. It is a hearty and delicious cake that is one for the buckwheat lovers. The recipe can be found in my first buckwheat flour e-book.
Gluten free buckwheat choc chip cookies
Another recipe from my first buckwheat flour e-book, these cookies are absolutely delicious and made with 100% buckwheat flour. Testimonial from a non gluten free friend is that you don’t notice the buckwheat; an excellent review in my books.
Gluten free buckwheat flour puff pastry
One more from the first buckwheat flour e-book, this pastry uses 100% buckwheat flour and is xanthan gum free. It is also psyllium husk free!
Buckwheat muffins
Like the other recipes, these muffins use 100% buckwheat flour. They are just sweet, soft and fluffy and are also egg free. They can use traditional butter and yoghurt or the vegan kind, depending on your dietaries.
Gluten free brownies (nut free or grain free)
If I had to choose my favourite baked good, it would be brownies without question. I have developed many in my time, but for rice flour free purposes I have chosen two. The first recipe, linked below, is my favourite brownie recipe. It uses almond meal for an outrageous, fudgy dessert. The second is a nut free version of those brownies that uses buckwheat flour. It is a recipe in my second buckwheat flour e-book.
Gluten free vegan brownie cookies
Yes, sorry, more buckwheat flour. However! This recipe will fool even the buckwheat haters. The cookies are fudgy, delicious and undetectably vegan. One of my favourite gluten free recipes without rice flour.
Gluten free gingerbread cookies
A good gluten free gingerbread always plagued me until I discovered cassava flour. These gingerbread are egg free, vegan adaptable and can be made without molasses, too.
Grain free pancakes
Another recipe to demonstrate the magic of cassava flour: these simple pancakes. They’re made with only cassava flour, so not an ounce of rice flour in sight.
Grain free rough puff pastry
Baking without gluten free is hard, but baking without grains? Even harder. This grain free, nut free puff pastry has your back. No rice in any shape or form, either.
Grain free chocolate self saucing pudding
This recipe wasn’t necessarily supposed to be rice flour free or grain free, but I found this combination to work the absolute best. It creates a rich and fudgy pudding with the perfect amount of sauce.
Gluten free crumble
Although you can use rice flour in this crumble, you can also use other flours, too. It is a single flour recipe, so you can use all sorghum flour or perhaps even buckwheat flour. I daresay quinoa flour would be delicious, too.
Flourless brownie cookies
These brownie cookies are not only rice flour free, they are completely flour free. This includes nut meals, too – no flour of any sort required.
Gluten free tahini cookies
For an incredibly easy cookie that requires no flour* whatsoever, try these easy tahini cookies. They are egg free, vegan, dairy free, etc etc, as they use only tahini, maple syrup and baking powder.* Baking powder generally uses rice flour, but there are rice free baking powder brands if you search online.
Gluten free noodles without rice flour
100% buckwheat soba without xanthan gum
These gluten free vegan buckwheat noodles are a recipe in my first buckwheat flour e-book. They’re xanthan gum free, egg free – basically everything free.
Gluten free buckwheat noodles
If you’re OK with xanthan gum, try my gluten free buckwheat noodles. They’re simple to whip up and still vegan.
Gluten free mains without rice flour
Gluten free low FODMAP lasagne with homemade lasagne sheets
This lasagne is a recipe in my second buckwheat e-book. It uses a low FODMAP vegetarian tofu mince and bechamel along with homemade buckwheat flour lasagne sheets. The lasagne sheets themselves are made from two ingredients: buckwheat flour and water. The perfect way to enjoy a gluten free lasagne without the need for rice flour.
Shredded tofu taco mince, low FODMAP avocado cilantro sauce and my buckwheat, quinoa wraps or grain free tortillas
One of my favourite meals at the moment is a giant, stuffed burrito. I have a recipe for grain free tortillas that use cassava flour, but my buckwheat wraps and quinoa wraps are both excellent rice free stand ins too. Top it all off with this heavenly low FODMAP avocado cilantro sauce.
Gluten free zucchini fritters
These gluten free fritters have a number of flour options, all of which are rice flour free. They can be grain free or nut free, too, depending on your requirements.
Low FODMAP Malai Kofta
This low FODMAP Malai Kofta is undetectably low FODMAP (and gluten free, too). The paneer and potato kofta are rice flour free, and make for a filling dish without the need for rice on the side.
Vegan bangers and mash (low FODMAP)
There’s nothing better than a big plate of bangers and mash on a cold day. This version uses low FODMAP, grain free and vegan sausages along with a creamy mash and vegan gravy. DELISH.
Buckwheat flour dumpling wrappers
These 100% buckwheat dumpling wrappers are a gluten free recipe from my first buckwheat flour e-book. They’re xanthan gum free, vegan and super flexible for rolling and folding. You can also experiment with my original gluten free dumpling wrapper recipe – it uses rice flour, but it’s very amenable to different flour combinations. I also have a rice free gluten free dumpling recipe here.
Gluten free zucchini swirl tart
This gorgeous swirl tart is a gluten free, grain free, rice free delight. It takes a bit of time to assemble, but what a centrepiece it makes! I have the original ricotta version linked below, but have since developed a vegan version which you can find here.
Pumpkin, ricotta and sage swirl tart
Another swirly delight, this ricotta, sage and gruyere tart is topped with heirloom pumpkin for a very autumnal finish. It uses a grain free pastry ensuring this tart is entirely without rice flour.
