Best coffee in Munich

I recently returned from an incredible winter adventure through Scandinavia. Before that, though, I tacked on a quick visit to the gorgeous city of Munich to see the cat I rescued from Mallorca. Pumpkin the cat now lives a happy and peaceful life in Munich and this was the perfect opportunity to visit. Naturally I had to dig deep and find the best coffee in Munich while I was there.

I am an espresso drinker, so my reviews are based on espresso. That said, I find that a good espresso generally means they’ll make a good milk coffee as well. Before I visit a place, I research TikTok, Reddit and the wider internet for the best coffee.

As a tourist, one of my issues with the Munich coffee scene was that all of the good spots are dispersed and not in the touristy bits (I’m selfish, I know!). I have tried to group these in order and to give you an indication of how long it will take you to walk there from Marienplatz. So, forgive me for using Marienplatz as the centre point of Munich but I feel this is helpful for visitors and tourists like me.

Pas Normal Studios

This isn’t exactly a coffee shop but a bike store with a small coffee shop inside. With that said, this was my favourite espresso in Munich. The staff were lovely, the shop was quiet and relaxed and the espresso was excellent. Pas Normal Studios is about a 15 minute walk from Marienplatz, heading south and towards the river, and there are lots of other nice things in this street (Suuapinga and Man Vs Machine, for one thing).

Kanso Coffee Labs

Kanso Coffee Lab is a trendy little shop tucked away in a shopping alley off Theatinerstrasse. It was super busy when I went – the signage isn’t clear until you get to the door but you’ll know when you see the crowds. This was another great espresso and they take everything very seriously. Kanso Coffee Lab is one of the closest to Marienplatz out of all these recommendations – it is 2 blocks, a 250m or 3 minute walk away from Marienplatz, heading towards the river.

Suuapinga

Suuapinga has a few different locations dotted around the city, many of which are attached to bakeries. They have a shop in Schwabing (north of the old town/Marienplatz for us touros) and Neuhausen (northwest of the old town). They also have a location in Wiener Platz (hehe) which is across the river from the old town. Finally, they have a location in Glockenbach, which is the store I visited. This Suuapinga store is about a 15 minute walk from Marienplatz (heading towards the south and the river) and there are lots of nice things in the area.

Man Vs Machine

I didn’t end up going to Man Vs Machine because there are only so many espressos a girl can have in a day. However, it is generally always included on ‘best coffee in Munich’ lists and I feel very comfortable including it here. Man Vs Machine has a few locations in Munich – the one I walked past was the Müllerstraße shop. This location is about a 15 minute walk from Marienplatz, heading south and parallel to the river.

Stray Coffee Roasters

Stray Coffee Roasters was one of the few spots (from memory) that was open on a Sunday morning. We stayed at 25 Hours Hotel in Munich and walked from there. Let me say: not an interesting walk there, so save your feet for other things. The coffee, though, was delicious and the place was buzzing. Stray Coffee Roasters is an approximate 35-40 minute walk from Marienplatz, heading in the opposite direction of the river and past the Hauptbahnhof.

Bean Batter

Bean Batter is a few blocks away from Stray Coffee Roasters and another spot that was open on a Sunday. I had a delicious espresso and they seem to do food and wine as well. Bean Batter is an approximate 30-35 minute walk from Marienplatz, heading in the opposite direction of the river and past the Hauptbahnhof.

Vits

Vits coffee was high on my list of coffee shops to visit in Munich. Sadly, I earmarked it for Sunday and learned they were closed. Such is travel! I have read great things and lots of people are very positive about it online. Vits is about a 10 minute walk from Marienplatz heading towards the river.

Gangundgabe

Gangundgabe was very high on my list as it is high on many other people’s lists. Unfortunately, their opening hours are not ideal. They are open 12-5pm Monday to Friday and closed on weekends, as of January 2026. Double check this before you go, though. Gangundgabe is about a 25-30 minute walk from Marienplatz, walking parallel to the river in a south west direction.

Sweet Spot

Sadly I didn’t get to Sweet Spot because I didn’t realise they had a location that was so central. It seems they have a few venues but there is a small Sweet Spot at Viktualienmarket which is only a 3 minute walk from Marienplatz. By all accounts they have a very impressive range of international coffee beans.
