As you may have seen from all my incessant posting, I recently returned home from a magical trip to Scandinavia. We made our way across to Bergen, an exceptionally beautiful city with the absolute best vibe. I’d highly recommend a visit to anyone, and while you’re there you can use this guide to the best coffee in Bergen.
A little caveat, before we begin. We were in Bergen in the lead up to Christmas and a few of the coffee shops had closed for the holiday. So, while I haven’t personally tested a few of these of places I have it on good authority that they are fully deserving of inclusion here.
A hot tip then, while we’re here: check social media for opening hours if you’re in Norway over the festive season. I got caught out by using the Google opening hours more than once. Those are pulled by Google from websites and don’t always reflect the up to date opening hours over a festive period.
With that out of the way, shall we get straight into it?
Kaffemisjonen
Conveniently located right near the entrance to the Fløibanen, Kaffemisjonen is a cute little coffee shop that also does toasts and some pastries. The central location makes it ideal for a stop in after wandering through the cobbled streets of Bergen on the Bryggen side. I had a really nice espresso here and the cakes looked delicious. The the time of writing, the Kaffemisjonen opening hours are 8am-4pm Monday to Friday and 10am-4pm Saturday to Sunday.
Blom
Unfortunately, Blom was closed when I was in Bergen. However, it seems that Blom and Kaffemisjonen have the same owners so hopefully I got a taste of what Blom offers. Blom cafe is located near Bergen University, which is a little walk from the main tourist areas. All of Bergen was easy walking and gorgeous, though, so it doesn’t feel like a slog.
Being the sister establishment, Blom seems to have toast and pastry food offerings just as Kaffemisjonen does. At the time of writing, Blom is open from 8am-4pm Monday to Friday and 10am-4pm on weekends.
Bergen Kaffebrenneri
The second place that was closed when we visited was Bergen Kaffebrenneri. The furthest walk from the main tourist areas, we walked here only to realise the Google opening hours were wrong. Lesson learned, always check social media! They roast their own beans and came highly recommended by locals I chatted to on social media and on Reddit. At the time of writing, Bergen Kaffebrenneri is open from 8am-6pm weekdays and 10am-6pm weekends.
Nobel Bopel
Nobel Bopel felt like being in the backstreets of Brunswick with vintage decor. If you’re from Melbourne, you might know what I mean. It had a very hipster vibe and the coffee was really good. It is a bit of a walk from the main tourist areas in Møhlenpris but a great little spot. At the time of writing, Nopel Bopel is open from Saturday to Wednesday 10am-8pm and Thursday and Friday 10am-10pm. They also serve natural wines and beers, hence the later opening hours.
Det Lille Kaffekompaniet
A gorgeous and cute cafe tucked in a classic Bergen alleyway, this is a great spot if you are en route to Fløibanen or just wandering the streets. It is a tiny little space but the coffee is great and so are the vibes. At the time of writing, Det Lille Kaffekompaniet is open from 10am-4pm daily.
Vågal
Vågal is a cute little cafe that couldn’t be central. Located across the road from the iconic Trekroneren hot dog stand, it is a vibrant homey cafe that was jam packed when I visited. My espresso was good and it was a nice central location, although it doesn’t seem to open until midday. My understanding is that it becomes a wine bar in the evenings and is open quite late as a result. I couldn’t quite figure out the opening hours (I think the jist is 12pm until late every day?) so I recommend checking their socials to confirm.
Våg Bakeri
Våg Bakeri is a gorgeous little Japanese and Scandinavian bakery. I had a delicious espresso here and my travel companion had a very envy inducing pastry. At the time of writing, Våg Bakeri is open from 10am-4pm Monday, 7am-4pm Tuesday to Friday, 10am-4pm on Saturday and closed on Sunday.
Lovetann Kaffe Bar
Lovetann Kaffe Bar was one last spot that was closed while we were there. This was on many a list when I first started looking at cafes in Bergen; I don’t know if it is the best coffee but it apparently a cute location and good food. It is on the other side of the bay to Bryggen but an easy walk. It is a vegetarian and vegan restaurant and bar as well as a cafe. At the time of writing, Lovetann Kaffe bar is open from 11am-9pm Sunday to Friday and 10am-10pm Saturday.
Klee Kafe
I don’t know about the coffee situation here, but people RAVE about the brunch. I figured I’d include it here on the assumption that good food normally means good coffee. At the time of writing, Klee Kaffe is open from 9am-8pm Monday to Saturday and 11am-5pm Sunday.
Fjåk
One more that is not necessarily a coffee shop per se (rather, a hot chocolate shop) but a must visit. They also do coffee (I tried an espresso at the Kode Museum branch) which was good too. The star of the show, however, is the hot chocolate: I had a white chocolate and brown cheese hot choc which was delicious and so unique. Worth a stop for sure! At the time of writing, Fjåk in Skostredet is open from 8am-7pm weekdays and 10am-7pm weekends. Fjåk at Kode Museum is open Monday to Friday 9am-6pm and weekends 10am-6pm.
Centrally located coffee shops in Bergen
One for the tourists! I will say that everything was very walkable distance wise in Bergen but I always find this helpful when planning my first coffee of the day.
