As part of my recent Scandinavian trip I spent 3 lovely days in Oslo, Norway. Being a highly caffeine dependent peson, I always research the coffee scene before I get to a city to make sure I’m buying the best of the best. With that in mind, let’s dive into where to find the best coffee in Oslo.
As mentioned, I always research the best spots for coffee before I get to the city. I do this through a combination of TikTok, Reddit and the wider internet. I find Reddit users are very generous when it comes to sharing their favourite spots.
In these guides, I have tried to group the coffee shops into locations and offer their distance from the centre. Because I am a tourist and I’d find it helpful, I have listed their distance from Oslo Sentrum. I chose Stortorvet tram stop as my ‘central’ location because I figured it is indeed central and an easy enough spot to identify.
Fuglen
Fuglen was the best espresso I had in Oslo (and in fact, the best espresso I had the whole trip). They were also open on Norwegian Christmas eve (the 23rd, as Norwegians celebrate Christmas on the 24th) and for that I am eternally grateful. At the time of writing, there are two Fuglen locations in Oslo: one in Gamlebyen (off to the right of Sentrum if looking at a map) and one in Sentrum (a 10 minute walk from Stortorvet tram stop).
Tim Wendleboe
Tim Wendleboe and Supreme Coffeeworks seem to be the favourites of locals in Oslo. I had a delicious espresso at Tim Wendleboe and they are regulars on the world barista championship circuit! Tim Wendleboe is in the Grünerløkka area which is a 20 minute walk from the centre of Oslo (I chose Stortorvet tram stop to represent the centre of the city). However, there is a lot of great stuff in Grünerløkka (it was my favourite part of Oslo) so I highly recommend the walk.
Supreme Roastworks
I had another delicious espresso at Supreme Roastworks (the Grünerløkka location). They previously had a location at Aker Brygge in the Porsche dealership but my research tells me this has since closed. I guess you’ll just have to make time in the schedule to head to Grünerløkka! Supreme Roastworks is a 30 minute walk from Stortorvet tram stop.
Lille Kaffe Brenneri
Lille Kaffe was a coffee shop on my list that we stumbled upon at the base of Grünerløkka. It was cosy and cute and I had a lovely espresso there. It is a 15 minute walk from Stortorvet tram stop in Sentrum. If you happen to be there in the afternoon or evening, it is next to a highly recommended wine bar called Territoriet.
Kuro
Kuro Oslo is a Scandi Japanese store that includes a fashion retail store as well as excellent coffee, pastries and wine. Kuro is located in the Grünerløkka area and is yet another reason to include Grünerløkka on your Oslo itinerary. Kuro is a 20 minute walk from Stortorvet tram stop in Sentrum.
Papegøye
Sadly for me Papegøye was closed when I planned to visit (that’s on me visiting over Christmas). It comes highly recommend in every list I have come across so I feel very comfortable including it here. Papegøye is a 20 minute walk from Stortorvet tram stop and is located in the Tøyen/Grønland area. Their website says they are also a wine, beer and cocktail beer and are 100% vegan with pastries on offer as well.
Hakone
Hakone was another coffee spot on my list that was sadly closed when we visited. With that said, I didn’t actually realise that there were 4 (soon to be 5) locations until writing this post. Hakone‘s locations include Storgata 23 (a 5 minute walk from Stortorvet) Karl Johans gate 1 (a 5 minute walk from Stortorvet) Markveien 46 (a 15-20 minute walk from Stortorvet) Økernveien 9 (a 30 minute walk from Stortorvet) and a soon to open location in Bogstadveien.
Java
Java is another spot I didn’t make it to while I was in Oslo, but it comes consistently recommended. The main barista is a former barista world champion and it has a sister cafe called Mocca (listed below). Java is a 20 minute walk from Stortorvet tram stop and the cafe is located in St Hanshaugen.
