Sorry not sorry that all my content has been Ninja Creami related as of late. I am thoroughly enjoying the machine and all the creations that have come from it. I have dabbled in the classics – vanilla ice cream, chocolate ice cream and cookies and cream. Today, however, I want to round up all my favourite healthy Ninja Creami recipes.
These are all the recipes I have published thus far, but I will continually update the post as I develop more.
For tips on using your Ninja Creami machine, I have written up everything I have learned so far in this post here.
Healthy Ninja Creami recipes
The term ‘healthy’ is often bandied about in recipes without much thought put into what it means. To me (and in the context of these recipes) it means lower sugar and containing some sort of nutrient providing ingredient such as fruit, yoghurt/cottage cheese or protein powder.
The myth that ‘unrefined sweeteners’ are inherently better than sugar persists (even for me). These recipes do use unrefined sweeteners (maple syrup or agave syrup are the primary sugars) but this is for a reason. Not only are liquid sweeteners very user friendly (they dissolve easily into the liquid ingredients) but they also improve the texture of your Ninja Creami.
As per Serious Eats, Liquid sweeteners provide body, creaminess and stability to ice cream.
So! Many of these recipes do use liquid sweeteners, but it is not purely in the pursuit of the ‘healthy’ label. I do try and use the least amount of sugar possible in the recipes to keep the overall sugar content down. After all, ‘unrefined’ sweeteners generally go down the exact same way as regular sugar.
A note on sweeteners
Other things I try to avoid in these recipes are non nutritive sweeteners like erithrytol. I know that many people use them and love them, but I have never gotten on board.
Some of these recipes will eventually use stevia because I personally have used it for SIBO related requirements. I generally find it to be an easy sweetener to use and it doesn’t cause me any ill effects as a person with ongoing gut disbiosis issues.
You are more than welcome to experiment with adding your preferred variety of sweetener to these recipes, but I can’t offer any advice on ingredients I have never worked with before. As with all my recipes, the substitutes I have tested are written up within in the recipe. If there are none, I have not tested them.
A note on xanthan gum
Like non nutritive sweeteners, xanthan gum can be a divisive subject. It is very helpful in creating a creamy texture in a lower calorie Ninja Creami ice cream. Xanthan gum is quite popular in the ‘healthy’ Ninja Creami community, which is why I chose to use it in some of these recipes. I want to cater to the people who use them and provide useful resources and recipes.
With that said, xanthan gum doesn’t always with everyone (myself included). The recipes that use xanthan gum have an option to made without it, as well.
Healthy Ninja Creami recipes
Let’s dive into the recipes. Each recipe will have the main ingredients listed so that you can choose whether it is right for you.
High protein Ninja Creami
This high protein Ninja Creami uses protein powder, bananas, yoghurt, peanut butter and a small amount of maple syrup and milk. It is very high protein (approximately 53g per tub) delicious and essentially a protein smoothie in ice cream form.
Ninja Creami raspberry sorbet
This delicious and fresh raspberry sorbet uses agave syrup as the sweetener. This brings a creamy and lovely texture to the sorbet and makes it very easy to mix up.
Ninja Creami mango kombucha sorbet
Mango, coconut yoghurt, agave syrup and kombucha unite to create this fresh and vibrant sorbet. I used a mango passion flavoured kombucha for a fresh and tropical flavour boost.
High protein matcha Ninja Creami
This high protein Ninja Creami uses matcha, protein powder, a small amount of xanthan gum, agave syrup and milk to form a delightfully creamy matcha ice cream. It contains approximately 49g protein and you can find the recipe here.
High protein cookies and cream Ninja Creami
Now that I have found gluten free Oreos (and made my own for those who can’t find them/can’t have oats) I am officially a cookies and cream girl. This recipe has two options: a yoghurt, protein powder and milk based recipe or a protein powder, xanthan gum and milk based recipe. Both are sweetened with agave syrup.
The yoghurt based recipe contains approximately 45g protein and the milk based recipe contains approximately 38.5g protein. You can find the recipe here.
High protein strawberry matcha Ninja Creami
I am OBSESSED with this gorgeous two tone flavoured Ninja Creami. It uses fresh strawberries, protein powder and agave syrup in the strawberry layer and matcha, protein powder, xanthan gum and milk in the matcha layer. The result is the perfect union of fresh and creamy. It contains approximately 40g protein and you can find the recipe here.
High protein coffee Ninja Creami
Come summer, I fully intend to have my morning espresso in high protein form. This recipe uses coffee, protein powder, xanthan gum, agave syrup and milk for a creamy coffee delight. It contains approximately 45g protein. You can find the recipe here.
High protein chocolate raspberry Ninja Creami
This richly chocolate protein ice cream has a distinctly fresh raspberry flavour thanks to (surprise) fresh raspberries. It uses protein powder, cocoa powder, milk and agave syrup for a creamy high protein treat. It contains approximately 38g protein and you can find the recipe here
High protein Ninja Creami raspberry sorbet
This fresh and beautiful sorbet is every bit as vibrantly flavoured as regular sorbet – except it contains protein powder. The recipe consists of frozen raspberries, agave syrup and protein powder. It contains approximately 26g protein and you can find the recipe here
High protein mint chocolate chip Ninja Creami
This mint chocolate chip Ninja Creami is high in protein but still tastes like a real treat. It uses protein powder, cottage cheese, milk, agave syrup, peppermint extract and dark chocolate for a healthier take on the classic.
It contains approximately 47g protein and you can find the recipe here
High protein mango passionfruit Ninja Creami
Like the raspberry sorbet before it, this fresh summer protein Creami contains nothing but mango puree, passionfruit puree, a small amount of agave syrup and protein powder. It contains approximately 26g protein and you can find the recipe here
High protein mocha Ninja Creami
Because it would have been rude to include a coffee flavour and not a mocha flavour. This recipe uses coffee, cocoa, agave syrup, protein powder, xanthan gum and milk for a creamy and rich mocha protein ice cream. It contains approximately 45g protein and you can find the recipe here
High protein peanut butter Ninja Creami
I guess the inclusion of this peanut butter protein Ninja Creami in this roundup depends on your attitude to nut butter. I am very much in the ‘healthy fats’ camp, but do what is best for you. This recipe uses protein powder, maple syrup, peanut butter and milk.
It contains approximately 55g protein and you can find the recipe here.
High protein pumpkin spice Ninja Creami
A deliciously seasonal recipe that also happens to pack in 200g of pumpkin puree, this recipe is good any time of year. It contains pumpkin puree, pumpkin spice, protein powder, maple syrup and milk. It contains approximately 32g protein and you can find the recipe here
High protein strawberry Ninja Creami
Last but not least, this delicious and bright strawberry Ninja Creami. It contains fresh strawberries, protein powder, cottage cheese, light agave syrup and milk. The recipe is the perfect mix of fresh and creamy and almost has a strawberry cheesecake vibe. The more you re-spin this Creami, the fluffier and more mousse like it gets.
It contains approximately 37g protein and you can find the recipe here.
